A few weeks ago while flipping through the channels on a Sunday afternoon, I caught "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" on G4 and actually watched it. It really wasn't bad at all for a documentary. I could give a review on this one, but chances are you (the reader) really wouldn't check the title out. So, I'm just using the documentary title and classic gaming subject to tie-in this video clip from Robot Chicken. It's called "Donkey Kong Meets Halo". Now where was this game when I was a kid? Shyte... I feel cheated. HA!
The characters, moves, combos, combo breakers, humiliations, and overall storyline really separated the game from the likes of Street Fighter or even the first Mortal Kombat game. I really think that the KI franchise did their part in bringing back the arcade games from extinction.
I'd really like it Rare and Nintendo would get back together to make another version (KI3) or remake the previous releases for home units. I read online that Rare's statement pretty much killed any hopes of seeing a KI3 in the future. Damn the luck.
Oh well, I'll just have to get my fix while playing it on my pc. I'm still trying to figure out how to use the controller vs the keyboard. It really sucks trying to pull off combos w/the keys. It's just not the same.
I am on a mission to find an arcade version of this game too. I can't even begin to think of how much money I'd blow on this game... Can you blame me? This was my favorite character, Jago. His fighting style was very similar to Ryu/Ken from the Street Fighter franchise. The thing that I liked about "KI" (Killer Instinct) was the combos (ultra, killer, ect...), linkers, humiliation, and killing moves. :)
I could kick ass with Jago, Fulgore, Orchid, Sabrewulf, Thunder, and Riptor. :) I sucked with the rest of the characters. I never put much time into learning their combos, combo breakers, or finishing moves.
Jago: A Tibetan monk following the Tiger Spirit, he is on the path of enlightenment to defeat the evil within him. He believes it is his destiny to destroy Ultratech. He has many of the same moves as Street Fighter's Ryu and Ken characters, including the fireball and spinning uppercut. His No Mercy moves consist of stabbing the enemy with his sword, and meditating, which causes a car to fall on the opponent.

Fulgore: A cyborg, part of a cybernetic project developed by Ultratech, the masterminds behind the Killer Instinct fighting tournament. Fulgore was entered into the tournament to test its fighting capabilities. If successful, the Fulgore unit would be placed in mass production. During the first Killer Instinct tournament, Fulgore met its end at the hands of Jago. A newer version of Fulgore was produced for the second fighting tournament. Fulgore has two fatalities, one in which it removes its head, revealing a large turret-like gun which shoots the enemy repeatedly. The other uses a laser beam from its eyes to reduce the opponent to ashes.

Here's a few other photos of both Jago and Fulgore:
Here's a video clip of Jago performing a 80 hit combo on Eyedol (Game Boss).
Here's a clip of Fulgore performing an Ultra Combo on Sabrewulf.
One other character that I was pretty good using was Sabrewulf:
Sabrewulf: Count Von Sabrewulf is stricken by lycanthropy, and is promised a cure by Ultratech if he wins the tournament. This is a semi-cameo appearance of Sabreman, known from Rare's 1984 game Sabre Wulf. Sabrewulf fights in his inherited castle as his home level, with biting and claw attacks, and the ability to howl and use his Flaming Bat. He has two No Mercy moves, one where he slams the foe into the screen, and one in which he stabs the enemy with an elongated claw.

Here's a great video of Sabrewulf in action.
