It was simple: Two men walk in, one walks out. I can't watch the UFC fights today. I prefer to watch the earliest bouts (like the first and second). I remember living in Nebraska and first hearing about UFC, my friend Tony came over and bought UFC 2. I had no idea what it was, but we popped it in the VCR (wow, how funny does that sound?).
I remember thinking how much of a badass Gracie was after his 2nd match, he really did a number on his opponents arm (at the elbow). That was my first viewing of Brazilian (Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu. Another badass of the octagon was Patrick Smith (see video below). Fast forward 3:18 minutes into the video. You'll see his bout with Scott Morris. It's a slaughter, but it gets your blood pumping and the adrenaline just shooting through your veins. Smith broke his hand punching Morris so resorted to using his elbows. Crazy huh?
Gracie successfully defended his title vs. Smith in the finals of UFC 2. I ended up losing interest after rounds and gloves were added. But the early days of the MMA sport and UFC were great ones. I just can't bring myself to follow it now.
